India is a land of mysticism and spirituality, with its rich cultural heritage and ancient traditions. Among the many wonders, Indian Hindu temples hold a special place. These majestic structures not only serve as places of worship but also hold myriad mysteries and secrets waiting to be unraveled.

The mysteries surrounding the Hindu temples have challenged the norms of modern science, may it be architectural designs, technology and machinery alignment of celestial phenomena, secret passages or hidden chambers and vaults, etc…

1)      PADMANABHASWAMY TEMPLE (Trivandrum, Kerala) :

 

Thiruvananthapuram/Trivandrum – Capital city of Kerala is where this richest temple is located. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is famous for the resting position of lord Vishnu on the Sheshnag (Snake). The Padmanabha Swamy’s idol is made of 12,008 saligrama stones and the length is up to 18 feet long.

Everything seems normal until now, but here starts the actual mystery.

Knowing that this temple is very rich and has abundant wealth, it has gained international attention. This temple of Lord Vishnu has been under the control of the Travancore royal family for centuries and even now. But still, in the year 2011, the Supreme Court granted permission to open the vaults found under the temple. During this time, there was a discovery made on the 6 underground vaults of the temple where around 22 billion worth of wealth was found in the first 5 vaults. However, the opening of the 6th vault was not granted access. It is believed that the opening of the 6th vault will be the end of the world. It is also said that the last avatar of Lord Vishnu which is the Kalki Avatar will enter through this door at the end of Kali Yuga. This chamber is locked without any latch or bolt. It is guarded with 2 long serpents carved using a single stone.  This mystery of the Padmanabhaswamy temple continues to captivate people’s imagination. The treasure and the deep secrets remain hidden within the temple.

 

2)      KAMAKHYA DEVI TEMPLE (Guwahati, Assam) :

 

The Kamakhya Devi temple is located in Guwahati, Assam. It is dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya, who is believed to be the incarnation of the powerful goddess Shakti. This temple dates back to the 10th century.

One of the mysterious things in this temple is the absence of an idol. There is no idol to be worshipped is specific but there is a natural stone shaped in the form of a woman’s vagina, known as “yoni pita”. This unique feature of the temple sets it apart from the other Hindu temples and adds a mystical aura.

Another mysterious thing to add here is that there is an annual phenomenon that happens here. It is believed that the goddess Kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle during the time of monsoon. The temple remains closed for 3 days. After this the doors are opened and an exceptional ritual is performed to symbolize the end of the menstrual cycle and rejuvenation of the goddess.

3) SHREE KALABHAIRAVANATH TEMPLE (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh) :

Then you must visit the temple of Lord Shiva in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

The Hindu temples in India offer garlands, flowers, coconut, basil leaves (Tulasi leaves), fruits, etc., but in this temple the god is offered whiskey and wine by the devotees. Several stalls sell whiskey and wine outside the temple which devotees buy before entering. 

Another mysterious thing is that the idol of Kalabhairavanath changes its appearance every day. Devotees claim the idol shows different moods, expressions, and even facial features on different days. Some say that one can witness a serene face, while on some days the face may appear intense and aggressive. This phenomenon continues to puzzle devotees and visitors of the temples.

These mysteries continue to intrigue devotees and visitors, drawing them to the temple for divine blessings and spiritual experiences.

 

4)      KAILASA TEMPLE (Ellora Caves, Maharastra) :

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple took around 150 years to complete with 7,000 laborers. This is a monolithic temple (carved through a single rock). This temple is also the world’s oldest monolithic temple. Built in an era when technology and mechanism were not as advanced as it is today.

The mysterious thing about this temple is that this temple is built in an upside-down format. Basically, the workers started the carving from the top of the rock and then descended down. The temple is around 300 feet long and 175 feet wide.

Archeologists believe that there are hidden chambers and passages within the Kailasa temple that have yet to be discovered. It is speculated that these hidden areas may contain ancient treasures or artifacts that could shed light on the temple’s construction and purpose.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva but the carvings are completely of Ramayana, which is an epic in Hindu culture. According to the researchers, there are supposed to be around 300 million Sanskrit carvings that are yet to be decoded. No human has ever succeeded in decoding the Sanskrit carvings. Its grandeur, intricate carvings, and historical significance make it one of the most remarkable ancient structures in the world.

 

5)      VENKATESHWARA TEMPLE ,(Tirumala, Andra Pradesh) :

 

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Vishnu himself has turned into an idol in this temple. The reason behind this is given in the book Vishnu Purana written by Sage Parasara, which is the old Sanskrit text.

The aura of this mysterious temple can not be explained in words however, there are approximately 50,000 people who come to express their devotion to Lord Vishnu every day.

The deity placed inside the shrine wears real hair and the idol sweats 24/7 even if the priests keep on making it dry. No matter how much they dry the deity’s back, it always remains moist.  Another enigmatic thing about the temple is that the devotees can hear the sound of sea waves crashing, upon carefully placing their ears on the deity’s back.

Also, the eyes of Lord Vishnu remain closed because the devotees cannot look directly into the eyes, since they radiate cosmic energy. But every Thursday, the eyes of the god are relatively smaller and the devotees can glimpse the god’s eyes.

Another salient thing is that, if we look from the aerial view of the Tirumala hills where this very temple is located, it appears to be the face of Lord Vishnu sleeping.

However, this temple is not only spiritual but also full of mystery. Starting from the hills to the mystery of the eyes, they keep reminding us that the presence of the great Lord is felt, depending on the person’s belief.
